COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) -- A Fort Benning soldier is in the hospital after he was seriously injured in a late-night fall from a building in downtown Columbus.

Twenty-two-year-old Taylor Ward was in unsatisfactory condition at The Medical Center in Columbus after the fall late Friday night.

Witnesses say Ward climbed the side of a building around 11:55 p.m. He fell, taking with him an American flag hung on a mast about 12 feet above the street, and landed on the sidewalk.

A police report said Ward sustained a head injury.

It's the second serious late-night accident in the past four months involving a soldier in downtown Columbus. In September, a 27-year-old Army captain lost both legs after trying to board a moving train.
