Jackson County Hosts Mock Shooting Event
Law enforcement officers and local leaders were in Jackson County Monday learning how they should respond if someone ever pulls a gun at a public gathering. The event included a mock shooting, much like what actually happened a year ago in Bay County.

MARIANNA, FL 1/31/2012 -- It had all the makings of a real commission meeting. There were even residents in the room, but it wasn't real. Everyone was there to learn what to do during a shooting situation.

"What I'm trying to get people here in Jackson County to understand is that it can happen here," said Jackson County Emergency Management Director Rodney Andreasen.

During the mock meeting at the Jackson County Emergency Management building, a pretend resident got heated over a proposed dog ordinance, and like what actually happened in Bay County, it didn't take long for the man to pull out a gun.

After the fake shooter ran out of the room, Jackson County deputies and EMS personnel flooded the building, also getting training on how to deal with this type of situation.

"It just brings it to life," said Greenwood Town Council member Kathryn Mickel.

Mickel posed as one of the board members Monday.

"I've learned that we aren't prepared and we need to be," said Mickel.

Bay County School District security guard Mike Jones spoke earlier in the day about the same idea, being prepared before a shooting event actually happens.

"It (school board shooting) can, it did. We had folks with the same attitude, 'Man it's not going to happen here,' it did," said Jones.
