Live at Five Interview 10/28 with Dr. Van Vessem on Diabetes Live at Five Interview with the Chief Medical Officer at Capital Health Plan, Dr. Nancy Van Vessem: People with diabetes have a high rate of complications related to disease within blood vessels such as heart attack and stroke. Controlling blood glucose levels does not eliminate this risk, in fact recent research showed that the risk of stroke did not decrease at all with tight sugar control. Vascular risk factors such as reduction of LDL cholesterol is important. A diabetic can reduce their risk of a heart attack or stoke in several ways. Lifestyle changes such as weight loss and exercise are very effective. In addition, a recent project done at Kaiser Permanente in California showed that taking three simple medications can reduce the risk by 60% or more within the first year. They are daily aspirin, a generic ACE inhibitor such as lisinipril and a generic statin such as lovastatin. The medication approach isn't very expensive at all. Aspirin is over-the-counter and there are both ACE inhibitors and statins on the low cost generic lists at many of the larger retailers such as WalMart and Target and also at the chain pharmacies such as CVS and Walgreens. All together, it can cost less than $10.00 a month. That’s a small price to pay to avoid the catastrophe of a heart attack or stroke. Please ask your physician if you are a candidate for this drug combination. For more information click on the link below. |
