Summertime in Tallahassee is a sauna.  The heat and humidity make outside activities unbearable at times, and knowing where to find a cool treat to beat the heat is a must.  Driving down Kerry Forest Parkway I noticed a small trailer parked on the Brickyard Pizzeria’s deck.  It was bright blue with white snowflakes and advertised sno-balls in bright red lettering.

I pulled into the parking lot and found a spot out front.  I walked towards the window and was greeted by the owner, Orville Bontrager.  The Snoball Shak opened a few days prior to my visit and Orville said he was still getting the feel of the business.  He was very friendly and gave me a run down on how he prepares the sno-balls and the many flavor choices he offered.  These included regular flavors such as cherry, banana, and lemon-lime to more exotic sounding choices including Tigerblood.  The small, medium, and large sno-balls were priced at $1.75, $2.50, and $3.25 respectively.

I asked what Tigerblood tasted like, and was told it was a mix of cherry and coconut.  Orville quipped it was very popular with the kids and channeling my inner Charlie Sheen decided to try it.  I ordered a medium sno-ball and watched as he filled a Styrofoam cup with shaved ice pieces.  He worked the top into the shape of a cone with a small red mold.  Once the ice was sculpted he took a bright red bottle of syrup and poured it over the top.  Before handing it over he stuck a white plastic spoon and straw into the sno-ball.

The sno-ball was very refreshing and made me feel like a kid again.  The Tigerblood was as advertised a mix of cherry and coconut.  It was sweet without being unbearably so, and there was enough syrup to coat the ice from the top all the way to the bottom of the cup.  The best part was the final few sips of ice cold syrup mixed with the remaining melted ice.

The SnoBall Shak is a good alternative to an ice cream cone, and for the price provided a cheap way to temporarily escape the heat.  It is open seven days per week.  Their hours vary, so it is probably a good idea to check the Snoball Shak's Facebook page before heading out to grab a sno-ball.
