Vegetarian and vegan food is not something I actively seek out. Recently I decided to venture outside my comfort zone of burgers and BBQ, and visit Higher Taste, Tallahassee's newest vegetarian and vegan friendly restaurant and boutique.
Higher Taste is located at 1350 Mahan Drive in the same brick plaza that houses TCBY. A blue metal roof runs in front of all the businesses. Parking spaces were plentiful, and I was able to get a spot in front of the store. A small yellow sign board advertised they served lunch, dinner, and snacks. Women dressed in colorful saris decorated the window.
Opening the front door I walked into the boutique area. It was full of brightly colored clothing. A small sign indicated the food court was in the back. I walked toward the rear and entered a small room. The walls were painted white at the top and a pale green towards the bottom. Three tables of varying sizes filled the room. A hot table and refrigerator lined the back wall. There were two people in front of me and I carefully watched him arrange each of their meals. Krishna praise music played over a set of speakers.
Mr. Das, as I later learned he was named, picked up a circular lime green plate and began assembling my vegetarian lunch platter. Saffron rice was covered with a lentil bean puree. Three mixed vegetable dishes were scooped onto the plate, along with a small salad and cream of wheat with strawberries for dessert. Puri (puffed Indian flat bread) and a spice bread stick with caraway seeds completed the meal. I also ordered a cup of Govind Madhav hot herbal tea.
I took a seat at the large table and began sampling each of the six dishes. The three mixed vegetables dishes were quinnoa with potatoes, sweet potatoes, and squash; cauliflower, eggplant, chick peas, and tofu; and potatoes with rosemary and sour cream. Of the three, my favorite was the one containing quinnoa. The green salad was covered in a dressing made from fresh almonds. The saffron rice covered with lentils was my favorite. It packed a nice amount of heat, and I used the puri to sop up the remains. The only thing I did not care for was the cream of wheat as it was cold, flavorless, and something I have tried to avoid eating since I was a boy growing up in New Hampshire. The tea, made byGovind Madhav, on the other hand was delicious and consisted of a mixture of sixteen botanical ingredients.
Service during my meal was very friendly, and Mr. Das checked on me a couple of times to make sure I was enjoying my meal. The dining area, while sparsely decorated, was clean and well organized. I would not hesitate to return to Higher Taster, especially with one of my vegetarian friends.
