As soon as I saw the sign for The Pecan Roll Bakery the 1994 classic by the 69 Boyz popped into my head. Cotton candy, sweet and low, let me see your tootsie roll.  My brain works in odd ways.  I knew this American treasure of a song originated a short drive down I-95 in Jacksonville, but it was still an unexpected association.

The Pecan Roll (here we go, tootsie roll) is located at 122 S. 8th Street on the right hand side of the road as you drive towards historic downtown Fernandina Beach.  I swear the place has a cloaking device because I drove past the place twice.  My third attempt was a success, and we made our way into the bakery holding the kids’ hands to make sure they did not get picked off by an iPhone occupied driver .

The entry deposits you in a small eating area that is painted a bright lemon yellow and decorated with various beach themed wall hangings.  A counter supported several large carafes of coffee.  A quick right hand turn brought us to where the magic happens.  Two cases full of a wide variety of baked goods were greeted by two pint sized customers who were enthralled with the pastries, cookies, and cakes.  The Pecan Roll’s menu is extensive and also includes fresh breads and pies.

I was in the mood for something savory and opted for two empanadas (chicken and beef). Miss Julia wanted a cookie but I wanted to get her something vaguely breakfast related.  As she stubbornly refused to change her mind the owner remarked there wasn’t much different between a cookie and a pecan roll slathered with frosting.  Point taken wrangler of yeast.  Mason was full of indecision and was finally sold on a kolache when he was told it was a roll full of sausage.

Once inside the car we divided the pastries.  Mason inhaled the kolache and as we drove over the bridge into Yulee asked for seconds.  Both empanadas were very good.  Flaky pastry encased well seasoned meats and  made for a satisfying breakfast.  Miss Julia ate half of her oatmeal raisin cookie and gave the rest to me to hold.  Its life span was dependent on her staying awake, and as she slipped off to dream land the cookie headed into my belly.  As oatmeal raisin cookies go, it was very good.

The Pecan Roll  is a great spot for a quick breakfast and I would love to sample some of their sweeter items the next time I am in town. The bakery  is open Wednesday through Friday 6:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., Saturday and Sunday from 7:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m and is closed on Monday and Tuesday. They can be found online at www.thepecanrollbakery.com, on Facebook, and reached by telephone at (904) 491-9815.
