When I was little one of my favorite places to go was Dunkin Donuts in Lawrence, Massachusetts. It was within walking distance of Tom Manzi Dodge. When out car was getting worked on my mom would tote my brother and I to the shop within walking distance of the dealership. We would sit at the counter and I would always order a chocolate crueller and a chocolate milk that came in a small cardboard container. I still enjoy a donut every now and then, and recently decided to check out one of the Tallahassee area’s local donut shops, Donut Kingdom.
From the outside Donut Kingdom looked like a small Greek temple. A triangular pediment was supported by two Doric columns that flank the double glass front doors. Overhead a bright pink sign declared the building was occupied by Donut Kingdom and cleverly replaced the o’s with pictures of donuts covered in sprinkles. The exterior was a medium beige color. Small round tables stood out front and were surrounded by molded plastic chairs. It was relatively cool outside and they were empty.
Opening the door revealed a tightly organized interior. To the right were a few booth occupied by a couple of Florida State students on their laptops. In front of me several frozen yogurt machines churned behind a small counter. Immediately to my left was a bright pink counter that mimicked the sign above the door. The lower half was covered in diamond plate, a a simple paper sign requested patrons like them on Facebook. Behind the counter rows of donuts were neatly arranged. While the clerk helped the woman in front of me I looked over the flavors. They ranged from the simple glazed to the cream cheese glazed red velvet cake. My mouth watered.
When it was my turn I decided to get three donuts and a small cup of coffee. One red velvet, blueberry cake, and Boston creme were slid into a simple white paper sack. The coffee was drawn out of a tall carafe. Coffee and cream were found next to a trash can that looked like it came straight from a 24-hour restaurant that specializes in a certain round, dimpled, breakfast food. With my coffee doctored up, I was out the door with a bill a shade over $4.00.
I waited to open the bag of donuts until I got out of the car. The first thing I noticed was the size. These donuts were huge compared to the ones you get at Donut Kingdom’s nationally known competition. I picked up the Boston creme and took a bite. The donut was fluffy, chewy and fresh. The creme was sweet without being overpowering. The glaze had a good chocolate flavor. It was pretty amazing donut. I turned my attention next to the red velvet glazed. I decided to cut this one in half so I could save some room for the blueberry cake. The red velvet tasted like I was eating a slice of cake for breakfast. The blueberry cake was just as good. I gave a piece of each to my friend Joe who noted they were delicious. The only thing that left a bitter taste in my mouth was the coffee. It was watery and no amount of cream or sugar could save it from being dumped down the drain.
In the fried, round, holey, breakfast food category Donut Kingdom dominates. They are worth a visit for breakfast, but I’d recommend skipping the coffee and grabbing an extra red velvet cake.
