People look at me like I am crazy!!
Every day “most’ individuals get to make decisions over their health. We get to decide what we eat and how much we eat and how much activity we will get.
The other day, I had the opportunity to talk with a group of young leaders in Tallahassee and give them my thoughts on health care. (Note: all of the individuals in the room were professionals and highly educated) Now most of the people they heard from on that day where actually part of the health care system…i.e. doctors, hospital administrators, government administrators…not me, I am just a person with an opinion. I approached the topic of health care from the side that I believe matters most…personal responsibility. Every day “most’ individuals get to make decisions over their health. We get to decide what we eat and how much we eat and how much activity we will get. To many in the room this seemed insensitive.

What I thought was fascinating is that their immediate focus was that I was only talking about those individuals who do not have access to healthy food, do not have access to a safe environment for physical activity and finally those individuals who work 3 jobs and have no time to exercise.
To clear the record…those are not the individuals I was thinking of at all. For those individuals I sit on many committees strategizing how to help them have better choices available.
No, the real individuals that I am talking to are individuals just like those in the Leadership class, educated and professional. They have available to them all the choices they need, healthy food, knowledge and time and they still don’t eat healthy or exercise enough ………and we as a society pay for their choices.
