JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (February 21, 2012) - FCSAA No. 3 Tallahassee Community College won its seventh straight game on Tuesday afternoon, defeating Florida State College at Jacksonville, 10-4.
Tallahassee is now 12-3 and opens a three-game set at No. 1 Santa Fe College on Friday.
On Tuesday, a pair of former Leon High Schoool standouts carried the Eagles. Freshman pitcher Nick Deckert started and earned the victory with 6.1 shutout innings. He struck out three. First-year catcher Tyler York provided the offensive spark for Tallahassee - he reached base five times and was 3-for-3 with three RBIs.
With the help of a Florida State College error, Tallahassee scored a run in its first at-bat when Graham Saiko's sac-fly to center scored Anthony Torres. The Eagles scored one more run in the fourth and took a 2-0 lead to the seventh before exploding for five runs.
York delivered the big blow in the seventh with a bases-clearing double that scored Nolan Thomas, Hunter Jones and Steven Brown.
Brown was 2-for-3 and scored twice. Trent Higginbothem and Nick Graganella, another Tallahassee product (North Florida Christian), also had two hits.
Tallahassee added two more in the eighth for a 9-0 lead before the Stars plated four run in the bottom half off the Eagles' bullpen.
Tallahassee finished the scoring in the ninth when Saiko scored from third on a passed ball.
Tallahassee and Santa Fe will open the three-game series at 3 p.m. Friday.
