Largest Job Fair in Area Today

WORKFORCE plus Release: 2013 Closing the Gap Job Fair will be held on Thursday, January 24, 2013

Tallahassee, FL - Today, the Department of Economic Opportunity Labor Market Institute released the local and state unemployment figures for December 2012. Per the figures released, the WORKFORCE plus region saw a minimal decrease of .1 percent in the unemployment rate moving from 6.7 to 6.6 percent over the month but a significant improvement over the year with a 1.4 percent decrease from 8.0 percent over the year.

In December, Gadsden County saw a slight decrease, moving from 8.7 to 8.6 percent. Over the year, there was a decrease of 1.6 percent from 10.2 percent. Leon County also saw a slight decrease of just .2 percent moving from 6.5 to 6.3 percent over the month but a 1.4 percent decrease over the year from 7.7 percent. Lastly, Wakulla in turn, saw the only increase locally, moving from 6.1 to 6.2 percent, however, they saw the largest decrease over the year at 1.9 percent moving from 8.1 percent. The Tallahassee MSA has consistently maintained the third lowest unemployment in the state at 6.6 percent behind the Crestview/Ft. Walton MSA and the Gainesville MSA. Additionally, the local MSA was 1.3 percentage points lower than the non-seasonally adjusted state rate of 7.9 percent. All numbers reported for local unemployment are not seasonally adjusted, meaning seasonality is not taken into account.

Additionally, the WORKFORCE plus region should be encouraged by the most recently released Help Wanted Online ® report which showed an increase of 130 in online advertised vacancies over the year. Major occupational groups with the most online ads in December 2012 were sales and related fields, healthcare ,technical and computer occupations.

On Thursday, January 24, 2013, WORKFORCE plus will be hosting the largest job fair in North Florida/South Georgia. The "Closing The Gap" Job Fair & Career Expo will be held at the Leon County Civic Center, 10 am to 2 pm. To prepare yourself for, WORKFORCE plus encourages job seekers to be prepared by following a few simple steps:

1. Register with the state-wide job portal, Employ Florida Marketplace. Complete a profile and upload a resume. Users can access the site at www.employflorida.com

2. Make an appointment to meet with a Career Counselor. Call 1-866-WFP-JOB1, email wfp@wfplus.org or visit any of the WORKFORCE plus offices to do so.

3. Take advantage of one of the many WORKFORCE plus' free resources including job search workshops, Resource Rooms with computers and internet and more. Prior to the job fair, WORKFORCE plus is hosting a special workshop "How To Work A Job Fair." Job seekers who attend the workshop will learn how to create a 30-second elevator speech; make a positive first impression, dress to impress, follow-up after the job fair and more in this hands-on workshop.
