Second Harvest of South Georgia opened a new distribution facility in Thomasville on Wednesday. The factory is located off of Roseway drive, is 65,000 square feet and has over half an acre of food storage capacity.
The facility is a replacement location for one of Second Harvest's four branches.
According to Donor Services Director of Second Harvest, Doug Griner, "It's going to be about a 40% increase across the board. For example, our current kid's café kitchen, that distributes food to needy children in the area, can serve about 2,500 kids per day. This facility is going to allow us to go about 10,000 meals per day."
The factory is designed to move around 20 to 30 million pounds of food per year from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Georgia state nutrition programs and various other companies that donate food.
"It's a blessing, there is no other way to say it. We are so proud to have this group expand and help the folks of Southwest Georgia," says Representative Darlene Taylor.
The new location is three times the capacity of the largest location in Valdosta. With that, Second Harvest hopes that they can double their efforts to serve the hungry in their community.
"One in three children are hungry, one in four adults. We [Thomasville] are the most impoverished of Georgia, where we are. So this service is more needed here than it is in other places. So, we're very excited that this facility can come to this region and really make these resources available to those in need," says President and CEO of Second Harvest, Frank Richards.
