2ND ANNUAL MARROW REGISTRATION DRIVE AT FSU
• Golden Key International Honour society is an FSU student organization searching for making difference in someone’s life.
• The Icla da Silva Foundation invites potential donors from diverse ethnic background to support patients in need of a bone marrow transplant.
• Massive registration is expected

On any given day, more than 6,000 people of every racial and ethnic background are searching for a potential bone marrow donor. Thousands of patients battling blood cancers like African-American Samantha, 21; Caucasian Kenna, 6; and Hispanics Juan Manuel 21 and Denise 30 face a needle-in-a-haystack search for a 100% match bone marrow donors. To help them and thousands of patients in need, the Golden Key and H.E.L.P clubs at The Florida State University along with the Icla da Silva Foundation have set up a 2-day bone marrow drive for Wednesday, September 29 and Thursday 30 from 9a.m. to 5 p.m.
“FSU students and Tallahassee residents could be the ones to save a life,” says Airam da Silva, president of The Icla da Silva Foundation, the largest minority recruitment group for Be The Match. “Potential donors from all racial and ethnic groups, between ages 18 and 60 and in good health are more suitable. The tissue type is inherited so patients are most likely to match someone of the same race or ethnicity”, da Silva added.
Golden Key International Honor Society is a student organization within FSU, and has helped spread the word about this issue on campus. Joshua Smith, a FSU medical student, is one of the leaders for this drive and says he has faith this second FSU-marrowthon will have a great turn out.
“We are so excited with the possibility of giving a second chance of life to many patients”, said Abigail Smith, one of the volunteers who helped establish the drive a year ago. “College students of this era are much more involved and enthusiastic about helping their community than previous generations at their age.”
