Thomas County residents bid a final farewell to Senior Chief Petty Officer David 'Blake' McLendon.

McLendon was killed last week , along with 8 other soldiers, in southern Afghanistan when the helicopter he was flying in was shot down.

Today, friends, family, and neighbors said "thank you" to the brave sailor who gave his life for his country. As the funeral procession drove on its way to Sunset Gardens Memorial cemetery, Thomasville locals stood at the side of the road waving American flags, and a large group of motorcycles and law enforcement officials flanked the hearse.

McLendon's Alma Mater, Thomas County Central High School, hosted his funeral service; people came in droves to pay their last respects to the local hero.

Former teachers say they are proud to have known someone who would sacrifice everything in the line of duty. They say his memory will live on in the residents of Thomasville.

At the beginning of this War our soldiers were making an impact & a difference for the Afghans. Until recently our military presence was holding terrorists at bay, but with the "double dealings" of Afghan's president or leader or whatever he is called, it is now time to bring our military home and protect our own borders. Pakistan is becoming more "pro" AL Queda & Afghanistan's leadership will eventually fold completely toward Al Queda and our military will be in the middle with greater odds against them. I do NOT believe, however, it would be wise for ANYONE, including the Pres. Obama, to announce WHEN we will leave. "Freedom of speech" does not apply to military strategy. Informing the people means that you also inform our enemies, and that puts our military's lives at greater risk. SOME things just should NOT be told until AFTER it has been done.

We salute this brave man for giving his life in the service of his country. Although this was in a far away land, if we do not stand against oppression in these remote regions, we will soon be fighting on the streets of our own cities. I never met you buit I know what you have faced having served 6 years in the Navy myself. It is a shame that the sacrifice of so many like yourself is meaningless to the current administration who caters to these terrorist groups, rather than seeking to eliminate them. Thank you Mr. McLendon for your committment and willingness to go in harm's way and pay the ultimate price. May God bless you and all your family in your loss.

We are proud of Blake and all of the others who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom...something many take for granted. Blake was a fine young man who's candle burned out way too soon.I hope everyone remembers to fly their flags proudly and remember those who have stood behind it.
