Free Trees in Leon County

TALLAHASSEE - Leon County is giving away free trees for your front yard, and they'll even plant them for you.

This year's Adopt-a-Tree program is offering 200 free Eastern Hophornbeams to county residents. It's a tree known for its flaky bark and yellow leaves in the fall. It can grow up to 40 feet tall and 30 feet wide.

The county offers a different species of tree every year to spruce up the local landscape.

"I like to use the program to promote trees that you might not normally see in a yard but that are still good landscape trees," said Tom Jackson, who is in charge of the project. "We try to emphasize native trees."

There's a one tree per household limit, and the trees are planted on a first come-first served basis.

You can log on to the county's website to fill out an application for a tree.

The Adopt-a-Tree program is only opened to Leon County residents outside the city limits.
