TALLAHASSEE - Tallahassee's emergency homeless shelter is facing an emergency situation.
The Shelter has reached record capacity, and it's running out of supplies to take care of everyone.
They line up by the hundreds for a warm meal and safe shelter over their heads.
"I lost all my family in California," said David Woods who hitchhiked across the country with his dog, Baby. "And I just wanted to get on the road and I always wanted to see Florida. And here I am."
The Shelter is seeing more come through their doors then ever before, with little explanation for it.
"There is a general need I think for people this time of year who have monetary disappointments," said Christie Koontz, Vice President of the Shelter Board. "They have a shifting of funds. They're trying to buy some gift for even in the poorest home."
The shelter is normally equipped to help 165 people. But this week 250 poured through their doors for dinner, and they literally ran out of food.
"It's cold," said Lizbeth Young, who has lived at the Shelter for three years. "Everyone needs to get in right now. It's not easy for them."
Sleeping arrangements aren't much better. Beds are full, mats line the floors, an overflow center is now open, but the rest sleep outside in tents or with no covering at all.
So the Shelter is asking for your help. They need food, blankets, warm jackets, anything to help feed this line of people who are hungry and homeless.
"There'd be a lot of cold and hungry people on the street if it wasn't for the Shelter," said Woods.
You can be certain the generosity doesn't go unnoticed.
If you'd like to help the people at the Shelter here's a list of things they need:
-- Paper Goods
-- Warm Jackets
-- Sleeping Bags
-- Any monetary donations
You can deliver your donations to The Shelter Day Center at 466 W. Tennessee Street.
