Homeless Christmas

There were several meals being served around Tallahassee for the homeless on Christmas, but as far as finding a place to simply spend time and go to the bathroom, it was harder than usual.

While many opened presents this Christmas morning many of Tallahassee's homeless were just hoping somebody would open the back gate to the pavilion behind the homeless shelter.

Glenn Miller, who stayed at the Shelter last Christmas said, "Last year on Christmas they had the shelter open. The outside, the back, everybody could go in, sit down and enjoy their selves. You know, not have to sit out in the parking lot like this."

Katrina Dillard, who visits the Shelter off and on says, "This is the first time I've ever known for them to be closed on Christmas and that's the real deal."

The day center was closed as many expected and besides the pavilion, there were not many other choices for places to go. Many of the homeless say they are arrested for loitering and there are not many public bathrooms and welcoming seats to sit in where they do not have to pay.

Dan Swanberg, who is homeless said, "So really, the biggest area for people to go would be a place called Lake Ella and a lot of people can't make it there due to health reasons, and I'm just wondering, what does the public normally do? What can we do?"

Places such as Annie's Day Care down the road served up hot meals, but once people ate, there was no where else to go, but back on the streets.

We are not sure exactly why the back of the Shelter was closed, but we do know a lot of homeless were very upset about not having a place to go this morning.

"what does the public normally do?" uh, go to work and earn a living instead of waiting for a hand out.
