Parents and school leaders are trying to stay on the same page in the face of budget cuts changing the way health care exists in local schools. Instead of Student Health Assistants working in each school, the Leon County School Board says select staff members could be properly trained to give care to students. But concerned parents do not agree with the proposed solution. A few parent leaders and the school board met Monday afternoon to discuss the health care issue facing local schools.
Superintendent Jackie Pons said, "We're going to do everything we can to make sure that we protect our children and we keep them safe and we have a safe caring environment in our schools, but it is difficult times."
Angie Pichard, a spokesperson for the hundreds of concerned parents said, "We feel like there can be some trimming of the fat off the budget and there can be some reallocation of funding and that's really what we're asking and we, we're just asking maybe for a compromise or for them to sit down and include us in the process."
The Leon County School Board officially meets Tuesday night and parent leaders say they will be there to express their concern to be a part of the decision process.
