A rescue effort is underway in the tragic abuse of over a dozen horses. While many are being rescued, others never had a chance. This female Arabian horse arrived in Tallahassee Thursday afternoon, with no name and no meat on her bones. She came from a farm near Marianna, FL where more than two dozen horses were removed because they were not been fed. Some of the horses have already died from starvation.

"Some of the horses. A few of them were just bones, literally. Very little flesh and I don't how they're going to make it for the next week, so uh, sad situation." said Bill Houmere. He and his wife Pam volunteered to take two of the abused horses.

Pam Houmere said, "If you saw the condition of them, you would too. I mean, if you had the facility to keep them, it was just despicable what was done to them."

The man supposedly responsible for the cruelty is former owner Tom James who has been arrested, accused of neglecting 28 horses. Authorities say James claims he fell on hard times and could not afford to feed the animals, even though neighbors say they offered help. Before long, it was the horses who had to endure the hard times.

"They're grazing animals and when there's nothing for them to eat, they go down hill very very quickly." said Pam.

So far--six more horses will be in the care of benevolent Tallahassee residents. The rest will be given care near Marianna and for the others it might already be too late.

The Houmere's say nursing these horses back to health and giving them medical treatment can be very expensive. They and others are encouraging people to donate feed, you can do so by purchasing some or donating money at Florida Farm and Feed on Weems Road near Tom Brown Park.
