As residents begin to notice a recent crime wave--area leaders know something must be done. It's a problem no community wants and Taylor County is working to prevent crime before it starts.

"I view crime...that it's going, it's kind of escalating at this point in time." said Jared Thomas, a Perry Resident. In less than a month there have been two separate shootings in Perry--one leaving a man dead.

Taylor County Sheriff, Bummy Williams said, "We realize that there's some problems in the county considering the large number of weapons that have been taken recently. And we certainly need citizen's input to help us locate some of these weapons--cause we know how dangerous it is for them to be on the street."

And beyond the street, the local state attorney says they will be stiffening the penalties for offenders. But some residents feel the problem should be handled earlier--saying kids need constructive activities to get involved with.

Montana Mitchum, a Taylor County Resident said, "There's nothing to do around here, so the only thing you can do is get in trouble."

The Mayor of Perry says the best way to deal with all of these issues is put them on the table, so community leaders and residents can work together to solve them.

"We're a resident just like every body else, so we're concerned and we want to address this just like everybody else does." said Mayor Emily Ketring.

At Monday night's meeting, the Mayor also listed the progress the community has already made in fighting crime--tearing down drug houses, focusing on emerging criminal trends, and much more. The recent increase in violence was something they needed to address immediately. Area leaders say they need the community's help to seek out the source of crime.
