FSU DUI Checkpoint

The DUI checkpoint was at the 800 Block of West Jefferson Street on FSU's campus between eight and nine p.m. Friday night.

Last year, FSU Police say they recorded 107 DUI arrests and in 2008, not counting Friday night, they say they've made 34 arrests so far.

University police use checkpoints to remind the public that they are always on the lookout for drunk drivers.

FSUStudent- you're right, I said that wrong. DDing is not the same as attemted murder, there isnt intent to kill. I should have said that I believe they should have the same punishment.

**hint, they need to set up side-raod blocks so all the drunk people trying to avoid going that way can't get out and run.

Hmmm... While I agree that Drunk Drivers should have licenses revoked and serve time, there is a big stretch between DD and attempted murder. Attempted murder implies that you pre-determined to go out of your way with the explicit purpose to kill somebody specific ... DDing is careless driving, but not committed with an intent to kill anybody. There is a difference. This doesn't excuse DDing at all, but to say that it is an attempt to murder anybody is not correct.

If FSU police is intent on stopping DUIs with these checkpoints, they need to do a better job, as anybody driving down Jefferson last night would note that traffic came to an abrupt halt ... and that something with the police was going down, it is not hard to avoid these sites with just a bit a foresight.

Is this a news story? Here's an idea...how about some stats from last night. Anyone actually arrested for DUI? It was a DUI checkpoint, right?
