Tallahassee, FL - More than a thousand people show up at a Tallahassee job fair. Many of them have been looking for works for months, and some are struggling with the loss of federal unemployment aid which ran out in December.

Tallahassee resident Ann Davis says, "It gets very tough out there." But, after being at the 2014 Workforce Plus Job Fair and Expo, Davis feels more confident.

Ninety-five employers set up in the Leon County Civic Center Thursday for the event.

Davis says, "It got quiet for the seasonal holiday. But, I see some pretty interesting things now and with this workforce job fair, I should be able to get back to work."

The U.S. Labor Department says Georgia's unemployment rate is 7.7 percent, and Florida's is 6.4. While the national rate fell last month from 7 to 6.7 percent, experts say things could possibly get worse.

Tallahassee resident, Wanda Wiggins, is one of the 1.3 million people left without unemployment benefits now that the federal program expired in December.

She says, "I'm 53 years old and I've been working all my life. This is the first time I've been without a job. I hope they do extend it [the benefits plan] because that'll give us time. They just said it dropped and just took the little money you had left on there. They just took that from you and just left you bare. I wasn't even working anywhere. That's what I was depending on to pay my bills. and everything with. It was just hard."

Workforce Plus says more than 1,000 job seekers registered for Thursday's job fair.

Wiggins left with an interview at IHOP on Monday. She says, "No matter what it is, dish-washing, whatever it is, I'm going to do it."

The job fair was from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Negotiations to extend unemployment benefits deadlocked in the Senate Tuesday. Congress returns from recess January 27th.
