Thomasville, GA- A little piece of history has landed in Thomasville. It's a restored World War II B-17, which came off the assembly line back in April 1945.

"If you're just seeing it still like this, you don't get quite the same thing, but when it fires up, it's basically an assault on all of your senses," said Keith Youngblood, one of the volunteers with the Liberty Foundation. "It's just remarkable to think of what these ten men would've been on this plane doing in combat," he said.

On Monday, meteorologist Brittani DuBose I got a chance to get a glimpse of what it must have been like for those men.

The fortress, also known as Memphis Belle, was cruising the Thomasville Sky at 1200 feet.

"These bombers would have went over to Europe, primarily over in England based there and with the Eighth Air Force they would have launched from there, dropping bombs in France and Germany during W.W.II," Youngblood said.

With only a few remaining W.W.II vets still alive to share their stories, folks with The Liberty Foundation say the aircraft helps educate people about the war.

"There are literally veterans who left this airplane in W.W.II and haven't talked about it since and when they see the airplane, they'll open up," said Bryan Wyatt, a volunteer pilot with The Liberty Foundation. "We get tears of joy, tears of sadness; we get exhilaration, just a wide range of emotions and stories."

Some of those World War II veterans will have a chance to board the Belle again this weekend at the Thomasville Regional Airport.

The aircraft will be open to the public and available for flights and ground tours on Saturday and Sunday, October 26 & 27th.
