Local Schools Get Geared Up

It's called "Gear Up" and that's exactly what it's intended to do for low income students in our area. The 18 million dollar grant has been awarded to schools in Leon County, Gadsden County, and Jefferson County.

Education officials say this grant will give kids additional post secondary instruction, so they will have a better competitive edge in a competitive world.

"The grant provides for mentors and tutors that can come in and help provide advance level course work and support. Students can get in these rigorous courses and then find that they can succeed just like any other student and really give themselves hope and the dream of college after that." said Tom Butler with the Florida Department of Education.

The grant is set to go into effect at the beginning of this school year in the fall. The specific schools awarded were James A. Shanks Middle School, Havana Middle School, East Gadsden High School, West Gadsden High School, Jefferson County Middle/High School, Nims Middle School, and the FAMU Developmental Research School.
