Parent and Teen Wake Up Call

Sometimes it's difficult for parents and teens to talk about the birds and the bees, so Leon County Commissioner Bill Proctor, the Health Network Alliance and Wakulla County teamed up to provide a wake up call on Sexual Awareness and the rise of Sexually Transmitted Diseases in the Tallahassee area.

"It's necessary to encourage and let our youth know of the consequences of any type of sexual activity and the consequences of an STD," says Kim Tucker of the Wakulla Co. Health Department.

Parents and teens went into separate rooms and through interactive games, the teens say they gained a better understanding of just how important their bodies and health really are.

"Our body is our business, so like for all the young girls and women don't let someone come and take what you got if you're not willing to give. Don't be willing to give if you don't know what you're doing," says teen and youth conference participant O'treise Hinson.

Teens weren't the only ones learning, parents say they walked away with knowledge as well.

Tucker also says, "As a parent I learned a lot that I guess I forgot about or wasn't exposed to twenty some odd years ago. Times have changed our youths are exposed to a lot more now than they were twenty years ago."

Teens also learned that even though they think they know it all about catching an STD, there is always more...

Another teen Ouentitia Jones says, "I thought I knew everything but I didn't because I didn't know you could get sexually transmitted diseases by your hands. If you touch somebody and they have it and you touch your eye, then you can get it in your eye."

The youth conference ended with each teen and parent making a pledge that they would take the lessons learned there, live a safe and aware lifestyle and lead by example.
