Local Day Care Practices Nap Time Fire Drill

Some local day care centers are stepping up fire drill procedures. One day care in Southwood practiced a nap time fire drill to prepare staff for an emergency. Florida state law requires that all day care centers do at least one fire drill a month in addition to other requirements.

Gina Johnston, the day care Director said, "There are things like sign in and out sheets, attendance records and all of those things travel with the teachers if they go to the playground, their splashday or something like that--that information accompanies them."

The Tallahassee Fire Department says it is also mandated to do a fire evaluation once a year. Staff members at the daycare say their fire drill took a total of about three and a half minutes.
