A bicycle community rides to remember the young man struck by a semi truck two days ago on Railroad Avenue. As friends mourn, they also ask for change from the local government to make biking safer.

A large group of bicyclists with heavy hearts rolled down Railroad Ave. Wednesday afternoon and they stopped to mourn where their friend, Trey Hayworth, met the end of his short life at 24 years old.

Close friend, Thomas Degraff said, "I wanted it to be hearsay you know. I wanted it to just be a rumor. I wanted him to come riding down the road 'hey guys' in his usual fashion."

Patrick Shepherd, helped place a ghost bike where his friend was killed. "We're going to put that bike out there at the corner. We're going to chain it up and we'll look out for it and other people are going to see it too." said Shepherd.

Before the group took the ride of Hayworth's life, several stopped at the city commission to support the local BikeWalk Network in its efforts to create a safer bicycle community. Program coordinators reminded the city commission of the tragedies that have taken place in the past six months.

"We're going to do as much as we can and this is going to stay with us for a long time." said Shepherd. Police say they are still investigating the accident that killed Hayworth--we'll keep you updated here on Eyewitness News.

I have been watching this story since the accident on Monday August 18th 2008. What a shame a young life was taken so quickly. If drivers would just become more aware of their surroundings, perhaps lives could be saved. Now with cell phones and every other distraction in todays life, people are just not concentrating on whats going on around them. The bike memorial was a very thoughtful and wonderful way to show repect for a fellow biker, TREY HAYWORTH, who meant so much to many! "KEEP THOSE WHEELS ROLLING"
