FBI Releases 2007 Crime Report

The FBI has released a report that says violent crime in the country was down in 2007, but local authorities are more worried about the here and now. When you step on a Tallahassee street where a man was murdered just days ago, it's hard to find comfort from national statistics showing less crime in 2007.

However, the FBI says violent crimes saw 0.7 a percent decrease, property crimes also decreased, and over 14 million arrests were made in 2007. For local authorities and residents it's encouraging, but nothing to hang your hat on.

Bill Proctor, a Leon County Commissioner said, "That does not mean that the concern, the interest in safety has gone down."

Sergeant Tony Drzewiecki, a spokesperson for the Leon County Sheriff's Office said, "While we're glad to see these numbers go down, we're not statistically driven. What we try to do is respond in real time to the threats that are on the street."

With the recent statistics far from living day to day on the street, residents are on guard for 2008, which is off to a rough start. "I think that we have to be cautious and remain cautiously optimistic that this strain will continue." said Proctor.

Data from the FBI's 2007 crime statistics report represents about 95 percent of the nation's population. To look at the report yourself, just click the convenient link below.
