[UPDATE] 28th Annual Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run

Today Attorney General Pam Bondi kicked-off the 2011 Law Enforcement Torch Run, benefiting the Special Olympics. Attorney General Bondi was joined by Governor Rick Scott, Senate President Mike Haridopolos, more than 300 law enforcement officers, and supporters from across the state. The correctional community will carry the “Flame of Hope” on a 1,500-mile journey throughout Florida for the 29th year of this tradition.

“I am excited to host today’s event alongside my family, including my
niece, Emma, who has Down syndrome,” said Attorney General Bondi. “I know firsthand the wonderful work Special Olympics Florida and our law enforcement community do on behalf of our Special Olympics athletes, and I want to thank each of them for their commitment and service. I encourage everyone to get involved in this event as an athlete, coach, volunteer or in another way.”

Three thousand members of the law enforcement community will carry the torch to the opening ceremonies at the Annual Florida State Summer Games. This year’s games will take place May 13, 2011 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista. In Florida, more than 16,000 athletes participate in Special Olympics activities throughout our state.

Tallahassee, Florida - March 30, 2011 --

Once again it’s time for the Annual Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run. Law Enforcement Officers from across the state have been busy raising money for Florida’s Special Olympians. Here in Tallahassee, the Leon County Sheriff’s Office and Tallahassee Police Department have raised money through fund raisers and payroll deduction drives. The Leon County Sheriff’s Office is proud to be part of this statewide event to raise awareness and money for the Special Olympics.

The 28th Annual Torch Run is scheduled for Thursday, March 31, 2011. Law Enforcement Officers from local, state and federal agencies will start the Torch Run at the Publix Supermarket at the corner of North Monroe Street and Tharpe Street at 10:00a.m.The route will take the runners south on Monroe Street to the steps of the Capitol. A Ceremony will be held in the Capitol Courtyard at 11:00a.m. to honor Florida’s Special Olympians. Sheriff Larry Campbell along with elected state dignitaries and leaders in law enforcement will join the runners and special athletes in celebration of this worthy cause.

Schedule of Events:
9:00a.m. – Registration begins in the Publix’s Parking Lot (1700 North Monroe Street)
10:15a.m. – Run begins
10:45a.m. – Runners and Torch arrive at the Florida Capital Courtyard
11:00a.m. – Law Enforcement Torch Run Ceremony in Honor of Florida Special Olympians
