Cold Weather Fire Warnings

Each year homes fall victim to fire and in Florida, officials say more than half of those homes did not have a smoke detector or had one that was not working. Some fire fighters say it's not worth the devastation.

"Any time you have to go to a house fire that's devastated a family's home, it's really unspeakable. You can't even explain how bad it can be." said Lieutenant Travis Oaks with the Tallahassee Fire Department.

With that in mind the State Emergency Response Team is trying to stop disasters that seems inevitable each winter. Ben Nelson, a meteorologist with the state of Florida said, "We're going to see near record low tempuratures across a good portion of the state the next few nights, so this is the time of year when folks start using those space heaters or their using the chimney for the first time. So we want everybody to practice that fire safety really really carefully this week."

Safety Tips from the state say to take precautions such as checking heating appliances for leaks and damage, keep space heaters away from furniture, walls and drapes, clean you chimney before using it this season and only burn firewood in it, and keep children and pets away from any fire source. Finally--make sure there is a working smoke detector in your home, because a device starting at about eight dollars
