FSU Increases Patrols During Break

The FSU Police Department says each day during the winter break, an extra two or three officers go around checking doors, windows and other places on campus to make sure no one can get in. Officers say they also check for signs of break ins.

FSU police say they have to increase surveillance, because calls for service go down. Lieutenant Jason Trumbower said, "We step up our efforts in being proactive--walking through buildings, stopping people that look like they don't belong and we actually bring in more officers over the break to do security walks through buildings."

Campus officers say property crimes are their main focus during the winter break.

Uh, according to what I saw on WCTV broadcast about this, all these guys were doing is checking doors to buildings housing classrooms. Most students live off campus. I really don't see the need for this to have even been a newsworthy story, except to maybe justify their jobs.

Thank you, thank you, to the FSU police for looking after our students' well-being and properties, as best you can! I really hope FSU can add more officers to patrol such a big area. My son is one of the Marching Chiefs and has been robbed in his very first semester at FSU. He had a really expensive instrument stolen 2 days before the Miami game, along with his Chief's uniform & other belongings. We know it's tough to control such a big campus, and we wish FSU could have more officers assigned to the campus area -- especially the streets surrounding it. In the meantime, thank you to many area officers for doing a job a lot of us would hesitate to apply for! If Gov Crist increases ANY budget, it really should be for the police force in all communities. Crimes are definitely on the rise, or will be shortly, due to the economy right now. We MUST have as many police officers as possible now.
