A Tallahassee Local Census Office opened on West Tharpe Street Monday to begin work on the 2010 United States Census. The Census Bureau says it will begin an address canvassing operation next month to validate local households.

The Bureau will mail out questionnaires in March of 2010 with the results expected by December of next year. Leaders with the census say it will require a large staff nationwide to complete the process--which in turn should create a lot of new jobs.

Kenneth Palmer, who is in charge of the local census office said, "Take about the number of people we're hiring, that's all over the United States. We're talking about a million people we're going to intend to hire for this 2010 census."

The National Census is taken once every ten years. The Census Bureau says it helps allocate local and federal dollars to where they're needed most.
