Bethel AME Release: Bethel AME Tallahassee Gives 500 Families a Thanksgiving Feast
Tallahassee, FL – November 7, 2012 - Bethel AME is starting off the holiday season in a major way. The Bethel AME Church, for more than twenty years, has distributed Thanksgiving Baskets to deserving families. This year, Bethel anticipates distributing more than 500 baskets to families across the City of Tallahassee. Reverend Dr. Julius H. McAllister, Jr. , senior minister of the Bethel AME Church finds clear instructions for this type of benevolence in Scripture. “At Bethel we believe that “faith without works is dead,” so we follow the example of our Savior and attempt to feed the masses, so that people know Christians care,” says Dr. McAllister.
The process begins in three ways, first, Bethel AME Church members were given referral forms for families they knew were in need of such generosity this Thanksgiving. Then Bethel also allowed families in need to call in and request a basket for their families. Finally, the leadership team for this project also contacted human service agencies and local schools for referrals. “The Bethel AME Church is grateful to all of our partners who make this annual event a success to include local grocers, like Piggly Wiggly in Quincy, other vendors, community volunteers like Charles Brown and Sons from Greensboro, Florida, and the list goes on,” says Connie E. Jenkins-Pye, the longtime chair and organizer for this annual outreach project.
The Bethel AME Church, whose motto is "Called to make a difference", on November 10, 2011 will distribute 500 baskets in the Church’s Fellowship Hall at 7:30 a.m., Saturday morning. There will also be a waiting list available for families who did not make the 500 name cut. If there are any remaining baskets that were not claimed at 9:30 a.m. those Thanksgiving provisions will be given to the families on the waiting list on a first come first served basis.
