There are a lot of things in life that we have no control over like who our family is...But sometimes, that's a good thing.
For one Tallahassee woman, the stork dropped her in the perfect place... And she's spent her entire life literally in the sweet spot..
You may remember Candy Strand as the lady that is part Christmas spirit, part Clark Grizzwald. Her light show entertains neighbors every year. But there's more to the name than you may know.
Candy Strand is a Reese. Her grandfather was H.B. Reese, the founder of a little known candy company. The name you may not recognize, but his work should be pretty familiar. H.B. Reese is the founder of Reese's Peanut Butter Cups.
"We never know what our pedigree is going to be. I'm fortunate that my mother and father are the parents that they are."
Candy never met her grandfather, he died just before she was born. But she's heard all about him, through pictures and stories. And of course, all the candy she could ever want as a child.
"I thought that everybody's daddy made candy and everyone made Reeses Peanut Butter Cups."
These days, Candy, her husband, brother, and mother all live in Tallahassee, a long ways away from Hershey, Pennsylvania where she grew up. The family sold the company to Hershey in 1963, but they have never been far from the brand. Even her name makes you wonder.
"I always thought my name was Candy because of the candy, but my mother liked the name."
Candy says she doesn't spend a lot of time talking about her lineage, she'd rather talk about her outdoor jewelry and her love for Tallahassee. But she's proud of where she came from, and will be really proud in October, when her grandfather is inducted into the Candy Hall of Fame in where else...Hershey, Pennsylvania.
Candy also makes Garden Candy from her home. You can inquire about it at gardencandybycandy.com
