TallahasseeVoices: Community Problems

Local residents face economic woes:

The economy is the biggest problem in local residents’ lives.

Cost of living, higher taxes, and the economy are 3 of the top 5 problems affecting local residents day-to-day.

Crime, traditionally one of the top 3 problems, has dropped significantly as a concern to #11.

When residents speak about others’ problems, they name the economy, unemployment/underemployment, and cost of living as the top 3 problems.

Problems local leaders should address:

Top 5 problems local leaders should address according to citizens are:
Growth & development
Cost of utilities
Underemployment/lack of high paying jobs
High airfares/lack of flights
Property taxes

Problems local leaders should address:

Lack of quality healthcare was ranked 41st out of 43 concerns that local leaders should address – lack of quality healthcare is seemingly not a problem

Traffic & crime, often near the top of the list, were ranked 7th & 8th, respectively.

Traffic slipped from #1 in 2007 to #7 in 2009.

Lack of leadership in local government leaped from #27 in 2007 to #6 in 2009 – citizens are concerned perhaps because of the weak economy and because of continued high property taxes and other taxes & fees.

Hard to believe they simply ignore the crime wave in Tallahassee that threatens to engulf the city. I guess more people are concerned about their money than they are their safety. Must be the same idiots that voted for Barry.

I wish Kerr & Downs would have called me, I would given them an ear full. You want a job, close off our borders to all. You weren't born here, you can't live here. Then send the folks that are here back to their own country. These two suggestions will create jobs thus provide insurance. I'm sick of these people coming to America, taking jobs, living off taxpayer money while building a business that isn't required to pay taxes. There are people in America starving, in the greatest country on earth. Why??? The powers that be are worried about everything else, but fixing our own. Isn't it time American's stand up for what is right for our own country. I hate to see a child starving in a foreigh land, just like I hate to see a child in this country starving. Let's fix the problems here before allowing others into the mix. God Bless America!!!

Yea the cost of eveything is a big problem because a lot of people don't have jobs and the ones that do aren't getting a pay raise anytime soon to keep up with the high cost. Healthcare is a big one several people don't have it nor can they afford it. Crime is a HUGE one, just this past week there's been a shooting, 2 stabbings, a guy tring to steal cars, and 1 guy getting robbed and a business getting robbed. I know it was FAMU homecomming but it's always like that in Tallahassee. It's just not as safe as it used to be.
