Building New Performing Arts Center Might Take Awhile

TALLAHASSEE - Leon County leaders say a new performing arts center in Tallahassee could be "light years away."

Mayor John Marks and Leon County Commissioner Ed Depuy met Tuesday to discuss the future center. The county says it will move forward with tearing down the old Johns Building, where the new center will go.

But city and county leaders agree it's going to be a while before it gets built.

"So, when a comment is 'we're light years away,' a more appropriate comment would be 'we're millions of dollars away from contributions from the private sector 'till this can become a reality,'" said Commissioner Depuy.

The new center would cost more than 130 million bucks. A non-profit group is heading up the fundraising.
