Last year in August, the Leon County Sheriff's Office busted a dog fighting ring, arresting two people and acquiring 14 dogs on one of the men's property.
The Sheriff's Office says the fights are a breading ground for more illegal activities. Sergeant McQuaig explains that the reason for why the fights happen is just like most other betting games.
He said, "The thrill of gambling, the thrill of winning, the thrill of being able to say I have ten fighting dogs at my house, that they're the toughest, they're the meanest, most vicious fighting dogs in the county. It's a reputation builder."
Leon County receives nearly a dozen dog fighting tips each year. If you hear anything related to dog fighting or animal cruelty, please call the Leon County Sheriff's Office at 850-922-3200.
