Art, Do My Job!

Hundreds of you responded recently to our challenge to put me to work doing your job.
Everyone from beekeepers to nannies responded, but the viewers' overwhelming choice was florist!
So last week I made my way to a quaint shop in Tallahassee where the Head Floral Designer's first command was, " Art, Do My Job!"
As I walked up to the door of Artistic Flowers at 777 Miccosukee Road in Tallahassee, I wondered how interesting this could really be.
Little did I know that before I left, I would use a guillotine, witness a stabbing, hear a soldier's story and find a possible cure for cancer!
The man who'd challenged me to do his job was Head
floral designer Jaimie Roberts.
" We come in in the morning to a table full of boxes of flowers that have to be cut," says Jaimie.
I ask, "any thorns on these, or are they taken off when you get them?"
" Yes, they end up in your fingers."
The flowers are cut on a cool contraption that reminds me of, well, a guillotine.
It's long, sharp blade slices right through a bundle of rose stems with ease.
Next up, bouquets 101.
Jaimie suggests we make an arrangement for my wife DeeDee, so we picked out some roses, grabbed a pot and got started.
It's not a job for sissies.
Even as a pro, Jaimie wound up with a "thorn in the flesh" from one of his roses.
Florists have some really weird tricks to make flowers look their best, like blowing into a rose bud to get it to open up!
I give it a try, but I put my lips around a bud like I'm drinking a coke and give it a hefty shot of air.
I ask Jaimie if I'd gone too far, and he responds, "You looked like you were about to eat it!"
And how do you wake up an iris so the bloom will pop out?
The experts massage and even thump the buds. Jaimie does it with no problem, but my iris won't budge. I finally ask Jaimie what I'm doing wrong.
He says "you may have killed it!" and then doubles over with laughter.
All the fun aside, it's clear that Jaimie and his boss, Mindy Salvo, love what they do.
Mindy is the owner of Artistic Flowers. When we ask what she likes most about her job, she says "the pleasure our customers get when they get their flowers. It's always a joy. It's always bright and colorful."
Mindy and Jaimie get to play the part of Cupid in some touching love stories.
Jaimie tells the story of a soldier who recently went off to war. Jaimie says the man arranged it so that his wife would get flowers every week while he was gone.
Speaking of wives-- back to Dee Dee's bouquet!
Apparently I wasn't quite coming up to Jaimie's standard.
He was pulling out my roses and placing them in better spots!
But finally it all came together in a gorgeous display!
Can the love expressed in flowers actually heal? Jaimie tells of a cancer patient whose children sent her an arrangement each month.
He says Artistic put a lot of love into those flowers, and now the woman is completely free of cancer. Jaimie says the customer thinks the flowers really helped.
With DeeDee's bouquet done, it was cleanup time! Jaimie had me down on my knees making sure I put every last leaf and petal in its place.
Jaimie may seem a little demanding, but he's really a great guy.
His boss is nice too, and thinks I have potential
She says I'm "a work in progress."
As I worked at Artistic that day, I was really thinking that I would probably take home the arrangement I was making for DeeDee (if they let me have it at all.)
Not so. Just before I left, I asked about the flowers and Jaimie said they had already been sent to her workplace! They weren't perfect, but she loved them.
