Tallahassee, FL - Senator Anitere Flores (R) Miami-Dade County, proposed SB 916 which provides a sales tax holiday in Florida this year from August 2nd through August 4th, 2013. She says, "the good news is that we're bringing back the sales tax holiday. Last year we didn't have it because the economy was so tight. The last couple of years we've had some years yes, some years, no.” She also mentions, "this year with the economy looking a little bit better was something that the Florida Legislature is going to be able to do to give back to Floridians and to tax payers and say we're going to give you a couple days off, especially in that time crunch right before school starts."
Items that would be covered by the 3 day back to school sales tax holiday are clothing under $75 per item, school supplies costing less than $15 per item and personal computers and accessories costing less than $750 each. Flores admits, "times are still very tough and I know that every little bit that we can do to help Florida's families especially when it comes to back to school shopping, any little bit that we can do to help certainly will be a benefit and it means a little bit more money into our taxpayers pockets and so we really see this as a good thing,"
Now, just because this bill may pass this year, it will still need to be voted on again next year. According to Flores, "this is something that we have to look at every year depending on what our state budget looks like that year so right now we know that we're going to have August 2nd through August 4th of 2013 as the sales tax holiday and we'll be back here next year pushing it for 2014."
The next stop for this bill will be the finance and tax committee and eventually the floor of the senate. The similar bill is also being proposed in the Florida House of Representatives.
