Tallahassee, FL - Traffic on and off two Tallahassee I-10 exits could pave the way for another interchange. One of the biggest questions City Commissioners have, is where the funding will come from.
Tallahassee City Commissioners met Wednesday night, and focused on the future-- specifically the possibility of a new I-10 exit ramp.
Nancy Miller, Commissioner: "It's in our comprehensive plan, it was part of the critical area plan for the Welaunee development."
City Commissioner Nancy Miller calls The Welaunee development an area that promises growth. The federal government has proposed an interchange near there for more than a decade.
It's located right between the Mahan and Thomasville exits... Which in the transportion world are considered failures.
Rob McGarrah, City of Tallahassee: "When we say failing, it's got more traffic passing through it then it can handle than it was designed for, the same with the Mahan interchange at I-10, it's starting to get there."
Commissioners grilled the presenters. Asking how much will it costs? Who will pay for it? When will it be finished?
Rob McGarrah, City of Tallahassee: "We're too early in the process to lay out the cost and the schedule and actually who would be the participants and paying for it."
Nancy Miller, Commissioner: "It's a very expensive endeavor to get in to an interchange and I just want to make sure that the city isn't or that even the local community wide isn't tasked with paying the entire amount of that interchange."
This project is still 10 to 15 years away from any type of completion-- which gives citizens time to voice their opinions on it. They can contact city commissioners and give their thoughts.
