Press Release: Tallahassee Fire Department

A properly installed and maintained smoke alarm is the only thing in your home that can alert you and your family to a fire 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, almost two-thirds of home fire deaths resulted from fires in properties without working smoke alarms.

That is why the Tallahassee Fire Department recommends replacing batteries in all smoke alarms at least once a year.

Replacing smoke alarm batteries while changing all of your clocks serves as a great reminder. In addition, smoke alarms should be tested once a month and if an alarm “chirps”, warning the battery is low, replace the battery right away.
