News Release: Florida Department of Transportation

Chipley – The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District Three and FDOT State Safety Office in cooperation with the Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO) are joining forces to promote “Alert Today, Alive Tomorrow” Thursday, April 10 from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. (EDT). Safety team members, local agencies, law enforcement and volunteers will be providing education materials to roadway users during safe stops at the Monroe Street intersections at Gaines Street and Madison Street and the area between.

The effort is to educate and bring awareness to motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists of the importance of using designated crosswalks to cross on Monroe Street and each roadway user’s responsibility – whether driving, walking or biking.
FDOT will also implement pedestrian safety measures at the Monroe Street intersections at Gaines Street and Madison Street beginning the evening of Thursday, April 10.

At the intersection of Monroe and Gaines streets, all left turn movements will only be allowed during the “green arrow” display. The change is projected to be much safer for the large number of pedestrians that traverse this intersection on a daily basis, as left-turning motorists will no longer be permitted to cross the path of pedestrians utilizing the crosswalk.

An “exclusive pedestrian” mode of operation will be implemented at Madison and Monroe streets. All vehicle movements in all directions across the intersection will be stopped at a red light allowing pedestrians to cross in all designated directions. In addition, signs indicating “No Right Turn on Red” will be displayed to eastbound motorists on Madison Street from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. to further reduce the potential for pedestrian/vehicle crashes.

All activities are weather dependent and may be delayed or re-scheduled in the event of inclement weather.
