Tallahassee, FL - September 17, 2012

Today, Florida’s students honor the founding principles of our nation by observing Constitution Day. The Florida Legislature designated Constitution Day in 2002 to commemorate the signing of the United States Constitution in 1787 and raise awareness for civics education, American history, and the significance of our nation’s Constitution.

“Our country is fortunate to be built upon intrinsic ideals such as freedom and liberty,” said Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart. “These core values shape who we are and serve as a compass for learning at every level. I encourage our students and educators to take this opportunity to focus on the United States Constitution and celebrate the foundation of our great nation.”

The Florida Legislature passed the Justice Sandra Day O’Connor Civics Education Act in 2010, adding civics instruction to Florida’s middle school curriculum. The course emphasizes the roles and responsibilities of federal, state, and local governments; the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of American government; and, the meaning and significance of historic documents, such as the Articles of Confederation, Declaration of Independence, and Constitution of the United States.

Visit the Constitution Day website to view educational resources, including lesson plans, links to national museums, archives, and hands-on student activities.
