Tallahassee, FL - The gas tax has been passed by the Leon County Commission.

Leon County Commissioners Jane Sauls and Bill Proctor were the only two to vote against the five cent per gallon tax increase.

The tax will go into effect in January of 2014. It is expected to generate four million dollars of revenue. Two million would go to Leon County and two million would go to the city of Tallahassee. That money will be used to pay for infrastructure projects as well as transportation costs.

"In order to fund our future, you need revenues to be able to do that. Transportation is a very critical aspect for any community to be successful in so many different ways," said Paul Harville, the only public member in attendance supporting the tax increase.

Commissioners supported the gas tax instead of raising property values. Some felt that students filling up in Leon County could support maintenance to the roads they drive on every day.

How much you pay to fill up your car could be about to change in Leon County. County Commissioners tonight will vote on a potential five cent gas tax.

It's like the third fact of life these days-- death, taxes, gasoline costing too much... But a County Commission vote could raise the price 5 cents a gallon in Leon County starting in 2014.

The proposed tax is expected to generate 4 million dollars worth of revenue. That money would be split between both the City of Tallahassee and Leon County. The money would then be used to fund capital projects in the Leon County budget and then the remainder would go toward transportation costs.

The average price of gas in Tallahassee, according to a national gas pricing feed featured on the WCTV Gas Prices page is $3.38. If the tax went into effect today, that would bring the average price to $3.43.

The commission will need a supermajority to pass the vote. That means they'd need 5 votes for the tax. There will be public comments starting at 6 pm followed by the vote.
