City of Tallahassee Press Release
April 13, 2013
This Saturday, the Tallahassee-Leon Community Animal Service Center (ASC) is celebrating National Pet Day by partnering with OneBlood for the annual Me and My New Best Friend Blood Drive from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Everyone who donates blood at the ASC on Saturday will receive a Golden Paw voucher and a free t-shirt. Donors can use their Golden Paws to receive a waived adoption fee for any shelter pet through June 30.
Donating blood is a simple act with a very powerful consequence. Each main blood component - red cells, platelets and plasma - has a distinct characteristic that can be used to help different types of health issues and people. In fact, one whole blood donation can save up to three lives!
To donate blood, you must be at least 17 years old, in good health and weigh at least 110 pound. With written consent from their parent/guardian, 16-year-olds who meet the other two requirements may also donate blood.
National Pet Day was created to celebrate the joy pets bring to our lives and to create public awareness about the plight of many different kinds of animals awaiting a forever home in shelters all across the nation.
Locally, the ASC takes in a variety of animals, including cats, dogs, rabbits, snakes, guinea pigs and more. No matter what type of pet you’re interested in, remember to adopt instead of shop!
Last year, Florida Blood Services, Community Blood Centers of Florida and Florida’s Blood Centers merged into OneBlood. If you have questions about donating blood or for more information on OneBlood, please call 877-7181 or visit www.oneblood.org.
The Animal Service Center, located adjacent to Tom Brown Park at 1125 Easterwood Drive, is operated and maintained by the City’s Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Affairs Department.
