While we all love our furry, feathered and scaly friends, many of us may not be aware of all it takes to properly care for a pet. Improper care affects the animal, but it can also lead to serious legal issues for the owner. To help current and potential pet owners learn proper pet care and local laws regarding animal care and treatment, Pets Ad Litem (PAL) has developed the Responsible Pet Ownership course.

This course is the first of its kind in the state of Florida because it can be taken by animal code violators in lieu of fine payment for certain civil infractions. Tallahassee City Commissioners authorized the establishment of an education program of this type during recent revisions to the animal code. The revisions aimed to raise the standard of care for pets in our community.

“Our enforcement philosophy is to educate first and to take progressive action as needed to resolve issues,” Animal Control Supervisor Jeff Doyle said. “Our hope is that offenders that successfully complete this course will become more responsible pet owners in the future.”

The free course is open to the public. It will take place on Saturday, January 8, from 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. at the Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Affairs Administration Building, 912 Myers Park Drive. The course will cover a wide variety of topics including, but not limited to, veterinary care, traveling safely with your pet, shelter, nutrition and tethering. Upon completion, participants will receive a certificate.

PAL is an alliance of advocates and professionals providing a legal voice for animals. PAL volunteers provide support to the ASC by volunteering at the facility, creating educational materials and assisting the City with legal issues related to animals. For more information on PAL, visit
