Tallahassee, FL - September 18, 2012

The fundraising arm of Leon High School, the Leon High School Foundation, has embarked on an ambitious campaign to set up a $1 million permanent endowment to help enrich the academic programs at the oldest, continuously operating high school in the state.

The goal of the Keep Leon Strong Campaign is to ask parents, alumni and members of the Tallahassee community to make a donation to a permanent endowment run by the Leon High School Foundation that will offer perpetual benefit to students at the school today and for years to come, said Tim Jansen, Chair of the Leon High School Foundation Board.

Recent budget cutbacks have strained resources and the Leon High School Endowment Fund is needed to buffer current cuts and provide enhancements in the future. “No contribution is too small or too big,’’ Jansen said.

Ida Thompson, Co-Chair of the Foundation’s Endowment Campaign and a Leon High School parent, said her goal is “to create an endowment that will benefit current and future Leon High School students. “I realize public schools have to raise additional resources to bridge the gap between public funding and items needed to compete in today’s educational environment,’’ Thompson said.

The campaign is being conducted by the Leon High School Foundation, a non-profit, volunteer organization that has raised money and distributed scholarships at the school since 1981.

The money raised for the endowment fund will remain as the principal with the interest earned annually devoted to enriching Leon High School’s Academic and Extracurricular programs.

Angie Desloge Sipple, a 1982 Leon High School Graduate and Co-Chair of the Endowment Campaign, said she became involved in the campaign to help perpetuate the school that has been an important part of her family.

“I attended Leon High School growing up, as did my four siblings, and now our children are students or alumni of LHS,’’ Sipple said. “The Desloge family wants to ensure that Leon High, its teachers and students, have what they need to maintain the excellent education we all received. I’m sure many people in the community will share my sentiments.”

Leon High School Foundation has enjoyed a long tradition of fundraising to augment the academic programs of Leon High. Recently, the Foundation has purchased interactive “smart board” technology for 19 classrooms, a new band tower, a new auditorium sound system, classroom computers, microscopes, books, electronic dictionaries, interactive programs for foreign language classes, an auditorium curtain, and equipped language labs. The “Keep Leon Strong” Endowment Campaign aims to build on that tradition by creating a fund that will benefit students for many years to come.
