Visit Tallahassee Press Release
Architecture - one of the floral variety and another representing a blend of Native American and Spanish colonial culture - takes center stage Saturday, August 17, when the Leon County Division of Tourism Development (Visit Tallahassee) continues its T.O.U.R. (Tourism is Our Ultimate Resource) Guide Program with free admission to Mission San Luis and Alfred B. Maclay Gardens State Park.
Mission San Luis, a National Historic Landmark and the only reconstructed Spanish mission in the state, offers insight into the life of Spanish and Apalachee Indian culture more than three centuries ago.
Tour the re-created village and structures like the Apalachee Council House, hear the ring of the blacksmith's hammer and walk along the same plaza that was once used for Apalachee Indian traditional ball games. Measuring more than 120 feet in diameter, the Council House, currently being re-thatched, held at least 1,500 people during meetings in the 1690s.
Period cooking, tours of the Franciscan church, Spanish house and Castillo de San Luis, food trucks and shopping at El Mercado will also be included in the free day happening 10 a.m. through 4 p.m.
Mention "T.O.U.R. Guide" at the entrance of Maclay Gardens State Park when visiting from 8 a.m. until sunset. Stroll through ornamental gardens designed in 1923, splash in the waters of Lake Hall and discover secret gardens and reflecting pools. For outdoor enthusiasts, five miles of hiking trails meander through the woods providing lake views, with other activities including fishing and kayaking. Pavilions and grills along the lakeshore provide the perfect setting for picnics.
Saturday is the final T.O.U.R. Guide free day of 2013. For more information on the free attraction day and other special offers, visit
