Tallahassee—

The Leon County Women, Infants and Children Supplemental Nutrition Program (WIC) will celebrate World Breastfeeding Week, from August 1 – 4, 2011, in Leon, Jefferson, Taylor, Wakulla and Madison counties.

This year’s theme is, “Talk to Me: Breastfeeding--A 3-D Experience” and the slogan, “Breastfeeding Support: Stay Connected!,” emphasizes how important it is for breastfeeding mothers to have a strong support network. Research shows that when breastfeeding mothers receive help from family, friends, employers and professionals like International board certified lactation consultants (IBCLCs), mothers get answers to their questions and solutions for their problems quickly. As a result, they are more satisfied with their breastfeeding experience.

The support a breastfeeding mother receives can come from several sources. In addition to receiving accurate, up-to-date evidenced-based, breastfeeding information from their WIC nutritionists, mothers are encouraged to seek information in a variety of ways, including online resources. Mothers may also always receive face-to-face breastfeeding support through trained lactation, peer counselors and weekly breastfeeding support group meetings from the WIC staff at their local county health department.

The celebration schedule is below. WIC staff and local community breastfeeding experts will be available to talk to mothers about breastfeeding issues. For additional information, please call the Leon County Health Department WIC and Nutrition Office, at 850-606-8300, and ask to speak to a WIC nutritionist.
