Low-Cost Rabies Vaccination Clinic Set for Tomorrow

Tallahassee, FL - September 28, 2012

Friday, Sept. 28, is World Rabies Day. The mission of World Rabies Day is to raise awareness about rabies, a deadly, yet preventable, disease that can infect both animals and humans.

As part of this effort, the City of Tallahassee Animal Control Division and the Tallahassee-Leon Community Animal Service Center (ASC) will be holding a Low-Cost Rabies Vaccination Clinic on Saturday, Sept. 29, from 9 to 11 a.m. at the LeVerne Payne Community Center, located at 450 West Fourth Avenue. All dogs, cats and ferrets in Leon County are invited to attend and be vaccinated.

“Our goal is to continually increase the number of animals we are able to protect with each new targeted clinic,” said Dr. Rachel Reeves, Tallahassee Animal Services veterinarian. “With the support of our volunteers, veterinary pharmaceutical companies and the local veterinary community, we have been able to successfully vaccinate over 2,500 pets through these low-cost clinics.”

World Rabies Day started in 2007 and is organized by the Global Alliance for Rabies Control. Since the inaugural campaign, World Rabies Day events have been held in 150 countries, educating millions of people and vaccinating 7.7 million animals.

Under Florida Law, all dogs, cats and ferrets must be vaccinated for rabies. Animals brought to the vaccination clinic must be on leashes or in a pet carrier. Pets must be at least 3 months of age to be vaccinated.

A suggested donation of $5 per pet will help cover the cost of the vaccine as well as future clinics. Save time and complete your registration paperwork before you arrive. Visit Talgov.com/animals to download a registration form.
