Tallahassee, FL - "There's nothing wrong with being lesbian, bisexual, gay, transgender or queer." Says FSU Student Shantel Moten.
Students at FSU shouted that message out loud and proud. "Out of the closet! Into the streets!"
The Pride Student Union held a march in observance of National Coming Out Day Thursday for the LGBTQ community and supporters. LGBTQ stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer.
Jason Miller with the FSU Pride Student Union says, "Through coming out, you reach such a better place in your life. The fear of at any given moment the world can come crashing down around you is gone. You can just finally be yourself and be who you are and love who you want to love."
Students started at Landis Green and marched across FSU's campus showing their pride.
They chanted, "Two, four, six, eight -- stop the lies and stop the hate!"
The students say gay rights have become a social and political issue. They applaud President Barack Obama for making history on May 9th when he became the first sitting U.S. president to declare support for same-sex marriage.
Moten, who's also with Pride Student Union, says, "I think an action such as that is a big step for our community and it shows that LGBTQ acceptance is just moving on. This is the lives of millions of people. We deserve to be valued and respected and have the same rights as straight people."
Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney does not support gay marriage.
This is the fifth year Pride Student Union held Coming Out Day events.
Coming Out Day march is a part of our annual Coming Out Week activities, including the kickoff event - a viewing and discussion of the award winning film, Saving Face. Coming Out Week will finish with a Speak Out in which attendees can share their coming out stories.
